The Wines

St. Romain "Sous la Velle" – Domaine de Chassourney

Frédéric Cossard, 2018

Pinot Noir – Côte d'Or, Burgundy, France

It’s a bit of a counter intuitive quest I’ve been on for some time now – one in which I find thoughtful; well farmed; “Natural” wine from a region has had very little room for both newcomers and organic farming … Burgundy. One particular producer that checks all of those boxes for me has been Frédéric Cossard and he seems to be everywhere I look. Cossard, along with his wife Laure, founded their estate Domaine de Chassorney back in 96’ with a few hectares of rented vines and has since expanded to seemingly every corner of the Côte D’Or under his Négociant label, the eponymous Frédéric Cossard.

If you’re looking for “Natty” Burgundy, look no further.

Matthiasson Napa Valley White Wine

Matthiasson Family Wineyards, 2014

Ribolla, Semillon, Tocai, Semillon Blend  – Napa, CA

Natural winemaking in Napa valley will forever be defined by and influenced by Matthiasson. This husband-and-wife were working for big commercial houses when they started their own label on the side in the early aughts. By 2009 they were heralded as  Casting away Napa's typical oak-barrel-aged "Chardonnay", they aged their wines in neutral containers and brought out Napa's true expressions from their first bottle on. Now almost 20 years later, they're a well-known name and a cornerstone of American natural wine circles.

Every cuvée we've tried is just honest, direct, and classic year-in year-out. Anyone who still doubts the superiority of organically-farmed wine should really give this wine a go. If you're ever in Napa, their vineyard is also worth a visit.

Barbichette "Chette Baker"

Barbichette, 2021

Gewurztraminer  – Finger Lakes, NY

Potent and floral orange wine from the finger lakes by the owners of Café Integral in SOHO. Their first wines were from 2020, so this is only the second vintage from them. Barbichette wines pride themselves on intentional farming and ingredient-sourcing. These grapes were biodynamically farmed and spent 10 days fermenting on skins. Like the trumpeter it's named after, this wine is funky, jazzy, and fun!
Huge thanks to Byron for bringing this one <3
